In July 2021, I came across a picture on Instagram that challenged me to think about what it truly means to be rich. This moment of deep thought and realization brought me back to my childhood which is how, “ACT BROKE, ACTUALLY RICH” came to life.
As I stared at the picture of the three rappers, I noticed that two had loads of jewelry on, while the other did not. Based on societal norms, some would say the two flashing their jewelry are considered “rich”. But is that really the truth? That was the question that shifted my outlook on my richness. That moment of thought enabled me to think beyond the societal norms behind the word, “rich.” If you look up the definition of rich you will immediately see “having a great deal of money or assets". Many stop there without acknowledging that rich is a multi-definition word that also means "plentiful and abundant" which adds a meaningful layer to the definition as a whole. If we put more emphasis on the many types of "richness" that are available to us, we would have a clearer understanding of its context. For example, are our lives abundant in love, friendship, health, and happiness? Are our "everyday moments'' full of good times and great friends?
Like many of us, I am a man who’s always dreamt of being rich, until that very moment when I stopped to reflect on my life. Although I was raised in a low income household with three siblings, I can’t remember a time where I did not have what I needed. It was at that moment that I realized I was rich beyond what I had thought. I grew up with two parents, a roof over my head, a bed to sleep in, food on the table, and clothes to wear. It’s the little things that so many take for granted, that contributed to me finding my own richness. That was when I realized, what rich was at its purest form.
You see, being rich is far more complex than what we are taught. If we put more emphasis on what we currently have rather than being caught up on the materialistic aspect of what being “rich” is, then we would truly understand the ways in which we’re all rich. Take a moment to STOP and think about YOUR purest form of richness….The thought that just came to your mind is the reason why this brand exists.
